FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. It's a movement focused on aggressive saving and investing to build enough wealth to retire decades before traditional retirement age. The goal is reaching a portfolio size where investment returns can cover living expenses indefinitely.
The safe withdrawal rate is the percentage of your portfolio you can withdraw annually without running out of money over a typical retirement. The famous "4% rule" suggests withdrawing 4% of your initial portfolio, adjusted for inflation each year. Our calculator lets you test different SWR percentages against your specific portfolio.
Enter your annual expenses and a safe withdrawal rate above. The calculator instantly shows your FIRE number (expenses ÷ SWR), the portfolio multiple (e.g. 25× at 4%), and optionally how many years your current portfolio would cover at that spending level. This is identity math — a first-draft target, not a Monte Carlo simulation or success rate.
The 4% rule was based on historical US market data and a 30-year retirement. For early retirees with 40-50 year horizons, many suggest a more conservative 3-3.5% rate. Our Monte Carlo simulation feature can test your specific scenario across hundreds of market conditions to find a withdrawal rate with high success probability.
