FIRE planning questions

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. It's a movement focused on aggressive saving and investing to build enough wealth to retire decades before traditional retirement age. The goal is reaching a portfolio size where investment returns can cover living expenses indefinitely.

The safe withdrawal rate is the percentage of your portfolio you can withdraw annually without running out of money over a typical retirement. The famous "4% rule" suggests withdrawing 4% of your initial portfolio, adjusted for inflation each year. Our calculator lets you test different SWR percentages against your specific portfolio.

Enter your target portfolio value and expected annual expenses. The calculator determines how long your portfolio would last at different withdrawal rates, accounting for investment returns and inflation. It shows your required FIRE number based on your spending and chosen SWR.

The 4% rule was based on historical US market data and a 30-year retirement. For early retirees with 40-50 year horizons, many suggest a more conservative 3-3.5% rate. Our Monte Carlo simulation feature can test your specific scenario across hundreds of market conditions to find a withdrawal rate with high success probability.
